With a great forecast - wall to wall sunshine all day and after checking Bins - a Suffolk birdwatching site - http://www.freewebs.com/suffolkbirding/ we decided to start off by heading over to Melton to see if we could catch a glimpse of some Waxwings !!! We found the spot in the middle of a housing estate near the River Deben by Melton Docks - sadly no Waxwings but saw Redwings for the first time :) We parked up walked through the industrial park onto the Wilford Bridge Road up to the bridge and along the River Deben. It was the most wonderful site with the river low and very icy and covered in birds !!! An Avocet was the first we saw but then enjoyed loads of others including a kingerfisher, curlews, egrets, lapwings, godwits and best of all some long tailed tits in the wood behind !!!!! We ambled again the river path enjoying the stunning veiws with ramblers, dog walkers and birdwatchers !! before making it back to the van and heading to Shingle Street for a sanhwich parked by the the Martello tower. We had a quick walk on the snowy beach seeing thrushes smashing snails on the pebbles!!! We then drove back a little way and walked along the River Alde to Simpson Saltings where three spoonbills were spotted yesterday !!! With no sign of the spoonbills we headed inland and came out in the middle of Hollesby Bay Prison !!! and back to the van with the sun setting. We then drove to Bawdsey Quay to finish of a truely wonderful with a cup of tea as the sun set over Felixstowe :) So a top top day out over six hours and walked at a guess 5/7 miles and I didn't even need my coat !!! We spotted 46 different birds - a record for us :) and not bad for a couple of novice birdwatchers with one pair of crappy binoculars !!!
